Workplace Wellness Strategies to Mitigate Dementia

Reading: 3 minutes
Lifestyle to reduce Dementia risk

The rising rates of dementia diagnoses in the UK are a pressing concern, reflecting broader global trends in high-income countries. While an ageing population partly explains this increase, other factors such as the modern pace of life, poor diet, and increasingly isolated lifestyles significantly contribute to the growing numbers. As a food scientist and nutritionist specialising in functional medicine, I have seen firsthand how these lifestyle choices impact our cognitive health. By leveraging workplace wellness programmes, organisations can play a crucial role in mitigating these risks.

Understanding the Dementia Epidemic

The increase in dementia diagnoses cannot be solely attributed to an ageing population. According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, the number of people living with dementia in the UK is set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This condition, which currently affects 850,000 people, imposes a substantial burden on individuals, families, and the healthcare system. Leading academic institutions such as King’s College London and University College London highlight that lifestyle factors, particularly diet and social engagement, play a crucial role in the prevalence of dementia.

The Role of Lifestyle in Dementia

Research indicates that high-income countries typically report dementia rates ranging from 20% to 50% due to lifestyle choices and healthcare access. The Lancet Commission’s 2020 report on dementia prevention identifies twelve modifiable risk factors, including hypertension, obesity, and physical inactivity, that contribute to the risk of dementia. Modern life’s relentless pace, coupled with poor dietary habits and social isolation, exacerbates these risks.

Why Workplaces Should Act – Workplace Wellness Programmes

Most people spend the most productive part of their lifetime in the workplace. By the time they get home, they have given the most effective part of themselves to their employers. Over the last 30 years, stress levels in the workplace have risen significantly, leading to increased fatigue and cognitive strain. Workplace anxiety and stress can notably impact cognitive function, potentially increasing the risk of dementia. Employers have a vital role in supporting their employees’ mental health and wellbeing, which can help prevent or lower the occurrence of dementia related to workplace stress and anxiety. Implementing a workplace wellness programme that includes the 5 elements of holistic wellness (nutrition, sleep, movement, mindfulness and personal health) will improve the overall health and wellness of your employees.  By creating a healthier work environment, organisations can enhance both employee wellbeing and productivity.

Checklist: Lifestyle Choices to Reduce Dementia Risk

  • Adopt a Mediterranean Diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil and fish associated with slower cognitive decline and reduced risk of dementia.
  • Engage in Regular Physical Activity. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Exercise promotes cardiovascular health, which is linked to brain health.
  • Maintain Social Connections. Participate in community activities and maintain regular contact with family and friends. Social engagement stimulates cognitive function.
  • Prioritise Mental Health. Manage stress through mindfulness practices, meditation or yoga. Seek support for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
  • Ensure Adequate Sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Sleep is critical for brain health and cognitive function.
  • Manage Chronic Conditions. Regularly monitor and manage blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Controlling these conditions reduces dementia risk.
  • Ensure that your workplace implements workplace wellness programmes specifically designed to look at nutritional health and incorporate the 5 elements of wellness: nutrition, sleep, movement, mindfulness and personal health.
